Poster Design: Rewriting Myth - Harpies No Longer At Zeus' Will
Challenge: Reshape and depict a narrative which can exist within non-gendered stereotypes.
Photo collage and illustration to disentangle the harpies from the ruling power of Zeus. As a human being shaped by gender norms, I challenged myself to write a different visual depiction of a group of female born flyers.
I see the collective as the conscious which scrutinizes the oppressive power structures attached to gender. The birdlike giants' omniscient oversight is of a hawk and the mental capacity is multiplicity. They are not deceiving, but rather, they are restoring justice. Their concern will be to preserve their habitat.
The process of art was highly beneficial, as I surfed through words & visuals, discovering mythology has placed collectives of female born people in the role of villain.
I wanted to rewrite this narrative, as a parent of 2 female born children, to donate a holistic energy, a collective of positive collaborations, inspiring the escape from an isolated, oppressive past.
In the path, together, toward a heart-centered approach to mind, body & earth.
Like a witness of passing time, experiencing authenticity in color shares a more complete story. Each application drawing attention to attitude & feeling. My color application shows how truly complicated and important color theory is to design. The highlights, the opaque reference, the mood & the mystery all better understood with color.
