Magazine ad for 1988, Carnegie Music Hall Event, honoring jazz legend, Stephane Grappelli. The ad brings the jazz vibe into the modern times with timeless illustration, magical photo treatment and a depth which makes copy pop.
Challenge: Create enthusiasm for generationally transcendent jazz music. Carnegie Music Hall wants audiences to focus on the reason for the event. Carnegie wants the ad to explain the event is worth it, wherever it is.
Objective: Visually create a nostalgic emotion, which replenishes the soil like the auditory experience of jazz music.
My design pairs a simple violin illustration with a photograph treatment to an image of ink mixed with water. I treated the type with a high contrast script, Altesse, which dances the artist's name across the page (from Typofonderie) and the high x-height of All Round Gothic (from Dharma Type). The type pairing works together to present a strong hierarchy, which connects the artist name to the violin. The ad says, the music is what makes the where and when important. Carnegie's intention is to celebrate the artist with admiration and authenticity.
